    Beat the Winter Blues

    Beat the Winter Blues

If you’ve ever read a Baby-Sitters Club book, you know all about Kid Kits – a fun mix of crafting items, coloring books, and other activities that are designed to keep kids occupied when boredom strikes. We took some inspiration from this fun fictional idea to come up with a fun and easy guide to beat the winter blues!

    Get Crafty

There will be days when no TV show or YouTube video will keep kids entertained. When that happens, it’s time to get creative. Winter crafts can be so much more than just cotton ball snowmen and popcorn garlands. Why not gather a few empty coffee cans, string them together, and decorate with glitter and paint for a pretty winter mobile? Try dipping fake flowers in glitter for a bouquet worthy of Elsa and Anna from Frozen, or downloading paper snowflake patterns to create a fun wall mural. Not only will kids have fun, they’ll also improve their eye-hand coordination, learn patience and planning, and boost their self-confidence.

    Outdoor Fun

The only thing better than watching snow fall is playing in it. Bundle up and get moving by making snow angels. If you’ve got leftover food coloring from a marathon cookie-baking session, mix with water in spray bottles and use to create eye-catching snow paintings. It’s not winter without a trip to go sledding or tubing, but adult supervision (and a warm snowsuit) are a must. Be sure to mix up some hot cocoa for a delicious post-activity treat – and don’t forget the marshmallows!

    Think Outside the Box

When it’s too cold to go outside, imagination can come to the rescue. You can make a book circle by picking a short book and having everyone take turns reading from it. If your little ones are budding entertainers, try putting on a short play. Just brainstorm a simple scene, have everyone pick a character, then raid the closet for “costumes” and voila – it’s showtime! Don’t worry about getting every line or gesture right; what matters is the camaraderie and memories of a fun winter afternoon.
