How to Prepare Kids to Be Siblings: the Definitive Guide

Welcoming a new member of the family is an exciting time for everyone. But trying to explain to a young child that they’re going to become a big brother or sister can also be challenging. Here are some ways to help ease the transition from only child to older sibling and help develop a strong sibling bond.

    Communication is Key

Depending on how old your child is, they may or may not understand right away what it means when you say they’re going to have a new brother or sister. Younger children may be shy, or be more interested in your growing belly than the baby inside, so talk about the baby in a light and positive way. For older kids, simple phrases like, “This is where the baby will sleep,” can help them visualize the practicalities of having a new baby around.

Another great way to help kids prepare is to go through their baby photos; it’ll help them understand what a baby looks like, and is also a wonderful way to bond with them before the new baby comes. And, if you have friends or family with newborns or young children, spend some time with them to get your older-sibling-to-be acclimated to how babies look, act, and sound.

    Get Them Involved

The months leading up to baby’s arrival are going to be busy. Getting your little one involved in the decision-making process is a great way to make them feel included in this special event. Ask them what colors they think they baby will like, and let them help you sort through the inevitable avalanche of new toys and clothes. Go through their closet or toy bin and ask them if they would like to give anything to the new baby. The more you’re able to make them feel a part of this momentous event, the better prepared they’ll be when the baby arrives.

    Don’t Be Discouraged

As the big day approaches, it’s very common for children to act out or regress in their sleep or eating behaviors. They may become needier, for fear of being forgotten, or develop new phobias and anxieties. Try to spend as much as time with them as possible and reassure them that even when the baby comes they will always be your special one.

Welcoming a new baby can be a wonderful source of bonding for you and your family. With a little planning you can make sure that even the youngest of children are excited to meet their new sibling!
